Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ - All Divisions

Are entry/submission fees payable?
Submission of entries is free. However, any expenses related to submission of works to the competition (for example delivery cost to the Secretariat) are borne by the entrant.
I am not sure which division to enter. How should I decide?
Please base your decision on the screening categories and Jury members in each division. While there are no restrictions on the number of works that can be entered, the same work cannot be submitted to more than one division. If eligibility conditions are not met, the entered work may not be eligible for screening. Please confirm the appropriate types of work for each division prior to submission.
I am not sure which category to choose. How should I decide?
Please choose the category, which most closely corresponds to your work. You can also specify the genre or type of your work in the ‘Other’ field on the entry form.
In the Eligibility section it states:Works must be completed or released between: Thursday, September 10, 2015 and Friday, September 9, 2016. Is it not possible to enter a work that was completed prior to this time period?
Eligibility for entry to the Japan Media Arts Festival is limited to works that were completed or released in the previous year. However, it is possible to enter works that were created earlier, if they were changed, renewed, or released during the above period. Uncompleted works are not eligible for entry.
I would like to submit high quality video work. How should I submit it?
A work will be screened based on the work itself, the work information, the image of the work and/or reference materials submitted. Because of this, when submitting video works as data, please be aware of the resolution and choose the appropriate method by which to submit them. Please also take note of the size restrictions of uploaded works to the Japan Media Arts Festival web server. If the file size of your data is too big to upload, please send disc media by post.
Is it possible to submit 3D video works?
Yes. Please send the work on BD or DVD by post. You must send 2 copies, on separate media. Additional reference materials may be necessary for the screening process. Please note that as a general rule, any work or reference materials sent are not returned.
When I enter video work or animated films, should I submit a video with a digest version of it?
In the case of videos of 30 minutes or more, also submit a three-minute digest movie. Please send two copies of media, each including the main work and a digest movie. It is not necessary to send two copies of the video of the main work and two copies of the digest movie.

FAQ - Entry Form

I made an error and need to change the entry information I registered. How should I change it?
In the 24 hours after registration, you can modify the information on your account. Please note that entry information will not be editable after 18:00 on Friday, September 9, 2016 (Japan Standard Time).
If more than 24 hours have elapsed, please choose from the options below.
a. Few changes: please mail the modifications to Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat (jmaf@cgarts.or.jp).
b. Many changes: please enter the work again. In this case, the previous entry must be deleted and the Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat must be informed by email (jmaf@cgarts.or.jp).
If “group” is selected under “artist information input,” how many group member names can be input?
A maximum of five names can be input.
How can the entry division be changed after a work is entered?
Please re-entry the same work and contact the Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat (jmaf@cgarts.or.jp) after registration is complete. The secretariat will delete the previous entry data.
I registered an entrant account but have not received the registration confirmation email. What should I do?
Please contact the Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat (jmaf@cgarts.or.jp). The secretariat will confirm the registration and validate the account.
The upload process of the work was interrupted. I could not finish the upload of my work.
Please try to upload the work again, after you have found a stable Internet connection (LAN). If you have trouble in using the JMAF entry system on Internet Explorer, please try again using another browser such as Safari or Chrome.

FAQ - Art Division

How should I submit a series of photographs or other graphic art works?
You can enter them one by one, but submitting as a series is recommended. When you submit a series of photographs or graphic art works, please choose a title for the series and send the data of all the images in the series as a single entry. If each individual work requires its own title, please indicate the titles on a document file and send it as reference material.
I will submit a 90 minute archive film of a media performance work. Should I submit a video with a digest version of it?
In the case of videos of 30 minutes or more, also submit a three-minute digest movie.

We may ask you to provide a specific password to permit play. Please contact the Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat by email (jmaf@cgarts.or.jp).
Is it possible to enter smartphone applications withheld from the public?

FAQ - Manga Division

Is it possible to enter a currently serialized comic or ongoing project?
Yes. A work that is currently serialized or ongoing will be screened based on the work and/or reference materials at the point the submission is received. If the work is continually serialized or ongoing after the application deadline (after September 9, 2016), it will be possible to submit the work for next year’s Japan Media Arts Festival too.
Is it possible to enter a magazine including several works as one work?
No. When magazines or other collection books contain several works, please enter each work separately.
My work is part of a collection book or magazine. Can I enter just my own work to the competition, even though it is included in a collection of works?
Yes. Please specify which work of the collection you wish to enter when you make your submission.
